Case # 1: male 20-30yrs
Week 1:
The client presents with sore lower back & tight/aching neck & shoulders.
I happened to be saying goodbye to a previous client as I see him walking up towards the clinic.
Straight away from 30mtrs away I could see at least one major problem by the gate of his walk. There was a major problem in & around his pelvic girdle/groin muscles.
Initial assessments of the client determined a right posterior rotation through the hips, a locked sacroiliac joint & restricted range of movement in the left deltoid.
No pain in the lumbar range of movement but tight & stretch.
Stork test returned positive
Given that this was his first session of Bowen Therapy at Bowen Therapy Redlands the first session consisted of a balance followed by some more targeted procedures consisting of basics, hamstring, sacral prone, pelvic, knee & head procedure.
Sent home with stretch exercise & instructions
Week 2: (7 days later)
The client returns & reports the following…
Was sore for a couple of days post treatment especially in the hips & legs.
The neck & shoulders were sore for a bit longer but settled down nicely.
(For those unfamiliar with Bowen Therapy – it is not uncommon for the body to respond to a treatment by readjusting itself, balancing itself etc & this will typically manifest in the form of aches & pains for the following 24- 48 hrs & then it typically settles down after that.)
Re-did the stork test which returned another positive result as did the Thomas test with 20+ under the knees.
Discussions revealed that the main concern was the lower back as this was impacting on his life activities.
The lower back had been a concern for about the last six years.
Procedures used – basic, kid, resp (sup), psoas, ur/tmj, iliacus, head procedure.
Sent home with stretch exercise & instructions
Week 3: (7 days later)
The client returns & reports the following…
Was sore for a couple of days post treatment especially in the hips & legs but not so bad this week & the ache was on days 3 & 4 instead of 1 & 2
The neck & shoulders are sore more frequently now than the legs & hips but less intense.
Procedures used – basic, hamstring, kid, cox/ob, teres major, Gracilis, u/resp, H/p, nth, wst, u/trapps.
Sent home with stretch exercises & instructions
Week 4: (7 days later)
Not so sore after week 3 session & with shorter duration & less intensity.
Left shoulder got better but returned after re-aggravation at work.
Did some running & kicking of the football yesterday & pulled up well afterwards. Wasn’t able to do this so well prior & would have pulled very sore for a number of days.
Procedures used – basic H/s rls 3 cox/ob ter/mj, intrspnts, rhom, H/p, sh, N, sh rls 1, pea, e/w, U/trapps
Update,… The client decided to leave his treatments after 4 sessions as he had got significant improvement from his treatments especially in his gate & the way he is now walking.
During the treatment of his legs during week 4, I was able to correct his current gate from his feet being nearly 60 deg everted to being near on true in alignment with his legs & his knees from being laterally rotated to being in correct anatomical alignment. He immediately noticed the improvement as soon as he got off the table in week 4.
I am currently treating another family member for other concerns & so I can say with certainty that at the date of this blog, this particular client is enjoying his corrected gate & improvements in his shoulder.
